Troy Collins

Born and raised in Nashville, TN – Music City USA and the home of country music! Obviously I must have grown up loving and playing country music, right? Well not quite as I grew up in the Hair Metal days of the 80’s with, Ozzy, Bon Jovi, Van Halen and AC/DC while at the same time listening to Southern Rock from Lynyrd Skynyrd and 38 Special. My dream was simple I wanted to become a Rock Star! So I started on a journey that would have me learning to play guitar and picking up the bass because there were already much better lead guitar players out there shredding like Eddie Van Halen. I was in small local bands playing high schools and eventually had the opportunity to join an all original rock band working on a record deal. We hit the bar circuit and even made it as far as a 6 month tour in Tokyo, Japan before we imploded like a Behind the Music episode. Not pretty I assure you but a lot of fun! So just like that reality set in for me as decided to cut off the long hair, finish college and go to work in the “real world”. Now you may not believe this but I did not touch and instrument for well over 15 years due to my all or nothing attitude. (A fact I left out of the early Nashville story above is my Uncle, Hillous Butrum, played with Hank Williams, Sr. in the Drifting Cowboys.)  When he died in 2002, my mom was kind enough to send me one of his acoustic guitars. So with the strum of a “D Chord” I was in love with the guitar all over again. One chord led to another which led to learning songs again which led to humming melodies which led to writing lyrics which led to the dream coming alive! God it feels good to be doing what you love…. But the most important part of the story is my family which reminds me of what’s always most important. I love my wife Melanie and two girls Danielle and Olivia more than the world!

I hail primarily from the Midwest but spent my youth running from the law and lived all over the country including Oregon, California, New York, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin. Okay the truth is I wasn’t really running from the law but just moved a lot. The running from the law part makes me sound more country outlaw/rock & roll so I’m going to go with it. Along the way I picked up conflicting accents and musical influences from folk to rock to country. I have been in a number of country bands and rock bands and performed as a solo act as well. My biggest rush was opening with my band in New York City for Bo Didley. My daughter (Hailey Rowe) is also a singer/songwriter (shameless plug for my daughter, visit her at haileyrowe.com). My brother is a talented musician that has a blue grass band that plays in the Midwest. If you listen to the songs I write, you will hear influences from favorites from my youth like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, John Denver (I am a little embarrassed by this one but what the hell), Lynyrd Skynyrd, Waylon Jennings, Marshall Tucker, Jackson Browne, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Bruce Springsteen. I primarily play rhythm and lead guitar and dabble in keyboards and banjo. I do most of the singing, recording engineering work and producing for The Brown Liquor Boys. Interesting personal fact: I own way more guitars than my level of talent warrants and can be found late nights working on my Pro Tools rig in the basement, or should I say The Brown Liquor Boys home studio, on our newest songs.
